A Foggy Morning

North Twin Lake, Yellowstone . Canon 5d4, 45mm, handheld, 1/40 @ f11, ISO 800

This is a bit of a change from my usual posts and this image might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I liked the way it came out. I’ve only been into Yellowstone twice so far this summer. This was from my second time in, almost two weeks ago now. The fog was pretty thick all morning but as I drove past North Twin Lake, the blooming lily pads caught my eye so I pulled over to try to work out a shot using them as part of the scene. The Canada geese swimming in the fog added a nice element too. A scene like this can be tricky to expose correctly and the fog would result in the camera underexposing it, so it was necessary to choose settings to trick the camera to properly expose the scene instead of making it too dark.

Happy Independence Day!

Fireworks and Absaroka Mountains. Canon 5d2, 105mm, tripod, 10 seconds @ f5.6, ISO 400

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Independence Day in the US! Be safe and wear a mask if out in crowds! This is a relatively old image and I don’t photograph fireworks often. The last 6 years, since we our first dog came home with us, I stay home on the Fourth to help keep the pups calm. The noise from fireworks stresses them badly. I used to take them camping to get away from it, but then we had a baby. While she’s ready for her first camping trip, it will probably be later in the summer, so once again, this July Fourth, I’ll be home comforting my dogs.

It’s That Time of Year…

Elk and calf. Canon 5d4, 500mm, beanbag, 1/800 @ f8, ISO 800

June is a great time of year to search for babies. I’ve seen more elk across the region lately, pretty much everywhere I’ve travelled. And yes, my trips this year have been limited to day trips closer to home than I usually make. Seeing young elk calves is enjoyable though and this little one was certainly entertaining, even when momma said it was time to settle down.
